في قلب القاهرة الخديوية، حيث تتنفس الجدران التاريخ وتتعانق الحكايات القديمة مع نبض الفن المعاصر، تقف عمارة الشوربجي كواحدة من أبرز الشواهد المعمارية التي جمعت بين الجمال والروح، لتروي فصولًا من ذاكرة مدينة لا تنام.
اليوم، تعود هذه التحفة المعمارية لتفتح أبوابها مجددًا، ولكن هذه المرة ليست كوجهة للتجارة أو المكاتب كما كانت في الماضي، بل كمساحة فنية ضمن النسخة الخامسة من معرض Art D’Égypte، الذي توزّعت فعالياته هذا العام بين فيلا فيكتوريا، فيلا فايلت، وفضاء Aslef Stigma، لتصنع جميعها خريطة فنية نابضة في قلب القاهرة.
قصة بدأت بسؤال
بدأت فكرة هذا التقرير عندما سألني أحد الزوار الأجانب أثناء الجولة:
> “من عاش في هذه الغرفة؟ وما قصة هذا المكان؟”
ذلك السؤال البسيط فتح باب الحكاية، ليقودنا إلى عمق تاريخ المكان الذي أصبح اليوم جسرًا بين الماضي والحاضر.
فعمارة الشوربجي ليست مجرد مبنى للعرض، بل ذاكرة حيّة تشهد على أكثر من مئة عام من التغيّر والهوية.
من “برايان ديفز” إلى “الشوربجي”
تعود قصة العمارة إلى بدايات القرن العشرين، حين أسّسها أربعة إخوة بريطانيين من مقاطعة ويلز تحت اسم Bryan Davies، وجعلوا الطابق الأرضي مركزًا لمحلات تجارية كانت من أشهر وجهات الموضة في ذلك الوقت.
وفي الخمسينيات، انتقلت الملكية إلى عائلة الشوربجي السورية، التي منحتها اسمها الحالي. ثم خضعت العمارة للتأميم لاحقًا، لتصبح رمزًا من رموز القاهرة الكلاسيكية.
وفي عام 2008، قامت شركة الإسماعيلية للتطوير العقاري بترميمها ضمن مشروع إعادة إحياء القاهرة الخديوية، لتعيد للمبنى بريقه الذي يجمع بين الطراز النيوباروكي وملامح الآرت ديكو الممزوجة بتفاصيل فرعونية دقيقة.
الفن يعيش هنا
اختيار Art D’Égypte لعمارة الشوربجي لم يكن مصادفة، بل رؤية تربط بين الفن والتراث، وبين الجدران القديمة التي عاشت الزمن والأعمال المعاصرة التي تُعيد تعريفه.
في هذا المعرض، يتحول المكان نفسه إلى عمل فني الجدران تحاور اللوحات، والنوافذ تحكي قصصها، والضوء يرسم لوحة جديدة كل لحظة.
رسالة الوعي
ما يقدمه Art D’Égypte هو أكثر من عرض فني، إنه رسالة توعية ثقافية تعيد الجمهور إلى جذور المدينة، وتؤكد أن حماية التراث لا تعني تجميده، بل إحياؤه بالفن والإبداع.
ختامًا
بين زخارفها الأوروبية وروحها المصرية الأصيلة، بين ماضيها التجاري وحاضرها الفني، تظل عمارة الشوربجي مثالًا حيًّا على أن التراث ليس ماضيًا يُروى، بل ذاكرة تُعاد قراءتها من جديد… بالفن.

The Shorbagy Building: Where Art Meets History

In the heart of Khedival Cairo, where layers of history intertwine with the rhythm of modern creativity, stands the Shorbagy Building an architectural masterpiece that bridges time, art, and identity.
Today, this historic landmark reopens its doors not as a commercial hub as it once was, but as an artistic venue within the 5th Edition of Art D’Égypte, alongside Villa Victoria, Villa Violet, and Aslef Stigma, forming a living map of contemporary art across Cairo.
It All Started with a Question
During a guided tour, a foreign visitor asked me:
> “Who used to live in this room? What’s the story behind this place?”
That question sparked a deeper curiosity. The Shorbagy Building is more than a venue it’s a living archive, carrying stories of Cairo’s evolution and the people who shaped its heartbeat.
From Bryan Davies to El Shorbagy
The building’s history dates back to the early 1900s, when four British brothers from Wales established Bryan Davies, a well-known fashion and textile store occupying the ground floor.
In the 1950s, ownership transferred to the El Shorbagy family from Syria, whose name remains attached to the site. Later nationalized, the building became a symbol of Cairo’s architectural and cultural memory.
In 2008, Ismaelia for Real Estate Development restored the building as part of the “Reviving Khedival Cairo” initiative, preserving its remarkable Neo-Baroque and Art Deco design enriched with subtle Pharaonic motifs.
When Art Lives Within History
Art D’Égypte’s decision to host part of its exhibition here was a deliberate act a dialogue between art and architecture, where every wall tells a story and every corner echoes with time.
The Shorbagy Building doesn’t merely display art it embodies it, allowing each work to converse with the past while inspiring the future.
A Message of Cultural Awareness
Art D’Égypte continues to redefine how people engage with heritage, proving that the revival of old spaces can become a source of education, inspiration, and collective memory.
It’s a reminder that protecting heritage doesn’t mean preserving silence, but breathing life back into it through creativity.
